Now, I know this book isn’t brand new. It was published in 2006 and won a Caldecott Medal in 2007. But my first-grader and kindergartner just discovered it in the library. My daughter checked it out last week, returned it on Tuesday. It came home in my first-grader’s backpack on Thursday. Both voracious new readers, I was surprised to see them so intrigued by a book with no words.
Flotsam by the immeasurable David Wiesner (we also own his version of The Three Pigs
) is breathtakingly beautiful. And interesting. And fun. It is poignant and silly. Classic and weird. And all without text. My kids and I can’t recommend it enough.
