Last week’s episode of Mad Men (ohmygod, if you’re not watching this, please start…) featured a 1963 Barbie. It was this one:

I wasn’t born until the ’70s but I had this Barbie growing up. My sisters and I inherited the Barbies that my mother and her sisters played with in the ’60s. We played and played and played with these Barbies and their ridiculously awesome clothes until they were all completely worn out, ripped, dirty and lost. And eventually, to my absolute horror in hindsight, they were shuffled away to either the trash or Goodwill.
But the episode made me wax nostalgic about the toys of my childhood. And Back to Basics Toys carries a lot of them! Please tell me that you remember these:

Chatter Telephone – we had this one.

Lincoln Logs Bicentennial Edition – not the current version with plastic roofs and windows, the old one with green planks for the roof!

Snoopy Sniffer – I can still hear the click, click, click of this as it was pulled across the floor
My all-time favorite though were the Fisher-Price Little People. The new sets just aren’t as totally awesome as the old ones. Check them out in all their glory at This Old Toy. I could spend hours…we had the house, the barn and the “city”. I think we had the airplane. Always wanted the school bus and the parking garage.
What were your favorite toys growing up?

Are you saying that Dad no longer has the Barbie with the black and white strapless bathing suit in storage somewhere? I got rid of it?? Ugh…

I have it. There was no way I was letting that get thrown out. I don’t have the black and white bathing suit. I looked and looked over a decade ago, but it was already gone. I do, however, have the black formal with the tulle at the bottom and her long black gloves. I also have the “Allen” doll and Donnie and Marie. None of which are still in anywhere near great condition but I love them anyways:)

My kids LOVE to play with their Lincoln Logs – yes, the cool wood version, no plastic included! Of course, lots of fighting ensues when someone knocks over the prized creation. Ah, I digress! We also have one of those walking ducks that has floppy feet…it quacks when you push it. Hey, remember the old popper? That thing you push around that annoyingly pops out of control? Not my fave, but still very reminicent of the old toy days… Very cute article!

I know this is an old post but I had to comment. I remember every single one of the toys you mentioned. Oh, did that take me back! Thanks for the flashback!
