2010 Caldecott and Newbery Medal Winners

I was a book nerd as a kid. Voracious reader. Some of my very best memories of childhood are afternoons and evenings spent combing the shelves of the public library. I can still close my eyes and see my first library card and the manila sleeve it fit into for safekeeping.

And I LOVED finding Caldecott and Newbery Medal-winning books to devour. For the uninitiated, the Caldecott Medal is given each year to the most distinguished picture book for children. The Newbery Medal goes to the book offering the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. In short, damn good books.

Some of my favorite Caldecott winners as a kid were:

Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey (1942 winner)
Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak (1964 winner)

(My children have quite a few of the more recent winners including a few that I didn’t realize had won but am pleased to know that they did. One they love that I DID know was a Caldecott honoree was Flotsam by David Wiesner. I blogged about it here about a year ago.)

And my favorite Newbery honorees:

The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare (1959 winner, also set in the town next to my hometown, second-favorite book from childhood)
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle (1963 winner)
From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg (1968 winner, all-time favorite book from childhood)
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson (1978 winner)

This year’s winners were announced this morning. I haven’t read them yet – but you can be sure I’ll be on the lookout at the library.

“By Order of the Management” Prints for Kids’ Rooms

So, I was poking around on Etsy earlier. As usual. And I decided to go through my “Favorites” folder and clean it up a little. And I came across John W. Golden’s Etsy shop. I had bookmarked it ages ago when I started thinking about what to do for my 2 1/2 year old twin boys’ “big boy room”. (Still haven’t decided, by the way.)

I had forgotten how cute these “By Order of the Management” prints were. The ones I’ve listed here are 6″x10″ but John also prints these in larger sizes, specifically 10.8″x18″ and 12.8″x21″. They make me smile.

My favorite is “Mind Your P’s & Q’s”…what’s yours?

Delicious Baby Slings by Polkadot Papoose

Confession: I didn’t wear any of my babies. With the first two, slings weren’t yet on the mom-to-be radar in my little corner of the Midwest. And the second two were twins – so I was a bit overwhelmed with life and couldn’t imagine even trying to wear either of them. But I can completely see the benefits of babywearing. (Yes, the intimacy and closeness of the attachment but MORE! IMPORTANTLY! the free hands!)

Thanks to Twitter, I recently came across the darling baby slings at Polkadot Papoose. And? Tara of Polkadot Papoose lives here in Kansas City!

Love the fabrics and what appears to be an amazingly simple sling design. I think that even I could figure out how to use this one…

Mom Calling Cards on Etsy

After I quit my full-time lawyering job several years ago (after kids one and two but before kids three and four), I often found myself at a loss when meeting someone new. It always seemed like the appropriate time to exchange business cards with contact information. But I didn’t have a business. And the only cards I had were old and out-of-date. Sassy Books: Flotsam by David Wiesner

Now, I know this book isn’t brand new. It was published in 2006 and won a Caldecott Medal in 2007. But my first-grader and kindergartner just discovered it in the library. My daughter checked it out last week, returned it on Tuesday. It came home in my first-grader’s backpack on Thursday. Both voracious new readers, I was surprised to see them so intrigued by a book with no words.
Flotsam by the immeasurable David Wiesner (we also own his version of The Three Pigs) is breathtakingly beautiful. And interesting. And fun. It is poignant and silly. Classic and weird. And all without text. My kids and I can’t recommend it enough.

Fashionable Medical Alert Bracelets for Kids

I ran across these great medical alert bracelets for girls and boys on the ole internets today. And lo and behold, I read the Lauren’s Hope About Us page and discover that they are made right here in my hometown! Well, a suburb – but still! Super cool.
