What Do Boys Wear to First Communion?

My seven-year-old daughter is chomping at the bit, dying to make her First Communion. Or, more accurately, dying to dress up in the fancy white dress and veil for the day. One more year…

My eight-year-old son did make his First Communion earlier this month. As you know if you’ve read this blog at all, I dress my kids relatively conservatively, classically. At least for church and occasions. I won’t share what my three-year-old twins dress themselves in on a daily basis. (One went through a week-long phase in which he wore three-sizes-too-big-soccer-cleats everywhere.)

So, number one son had a single sartorial request related to First Communion. A bow tie. A real one.

I was lucky enough to find a real bow tie with an adjustable neck band in the men’s department of a local luxury retailer. The tie wasn’t exactly cheap ($50) but it was perfect. The one pictured below isn’t the one we bought – but it’s darn close.

The pants, button down and shoes came from Nordstrom. The jacket (which looks almost exactly like the one pictured below) came from the same retailer as the tie. It was $130 and is made by Scotch & Soda, which also makes super cool men’s clothes. (Also, I had a gift certificate that made the jacket only $30. Yay!)

And, in the end, he looked darling. Perfect. Cutest kid there. Ask anyone.

I gravitate to old-fashioned, classic kids’ clothing and shoes. Don’t get me wrong – I love modern, fun and funky as much as the next person. But it’s this kind of stuff that tugs at my heartstrings (and, well, my ovaries. Don’t tell my husband. He’ll have a freakin’ coronary. Four kids is enough for us.)

I – very stupidly – got my first sunburn of the season this weekend. Sitting out at my son’s soccer game. My kids, of course, were slathered in sunscreen – by me – and were well-protected from the sun’s harmful rays. Amazing, isn’t it, how moms watch out for their kids’ health and safety and forget about their own? I know I’m not the only one…

In addition to sunscreen, you can buy anti-UV clothing for your kids. The clothes are specially treated to enhance their Ultraviolet Protection Factor. The clothing manufacture Petit Patapon has a really cute line that rates a 40 UPF – reducing the amount of the sun’s rays which reach your child’s skin by 40 times. These clothes block 97.5% of those bad-for-you UVA/UVB rays.

Maybe it’s because I’m the mom of three boys (and one girl – but the point of this is the boys). Maybe it’s because I’m married to a corporate-world-by-day, wannabe-rock-star-guitar-player-by-night. But as I browsed through the great choices for tweens at Juvie, these Kingsley t-shirts popped out at me every time.

I’ve featured Kingsley before – a cool guitar as tree hoodie – so my love is not newfound. I hope you find love in one of these:
